New Moon energy is introspective and quiet. It’s a time when the two luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, are conjunct in the same Zodiac sign. With the Moon situated between the Sun and Earth, the sky at night seems dark with little reflection or illumination of this lunar energy.
This is the beginning of a 29.5 day cycle where the Moon’s relationship to the Sun will move through phases of New, Crescent, First Quarter, Gibbous, Full, Disseminating, Last Quarter, and Balsamic.
The New Moon begins its waxing phase where the light and energy of the Moon will build to its full illumination a couple of weeks later. This is a good time to set new intentions that you may hope to bring to fruition at the Full Moon and integrate as the Moon wanes back to New.
This New Moon in Cancer highlights the Cancer-Capricorn axis. What you set in motion at this New Moon will begin to gain momentum as the moonlight increases towards the Full Moon in Capricorn later in July.
The Moon sits very comfortably in Cancer, its sign of Rulership. The intentions you set will be supported by a protective, nurturing energy that will allow you to immerse yourself a little deeper into the process.
The Moon in Cancer invites you to acknowledge how you respond to emotionally triggering situations or interactions. If your natural reaction has been to put walls up, isolate or become defensive, why not look at different maybe more enterprising ways in which you can respond. Some of the defence mechanisms we develop unconsciously may not be the most effective. The methods we use for self-preservation can sometimes act as obstructions to express what we’re really feeling and need. Think of the Crab with its pincers and hard exoskeleton which are used in times of defence to protect its softer insides.
Which part of your life or personality can use some of this New Moon energy? The clue lies within the house of your Natal Chart where Cancer is present. This is where the focus of your intention will be most relevant. Even more so if the Sun/Moon are in aspect to any of the planets in your chart.
Another factor to this New Moon in Cancer is the conjunction to Hades which can tap into another level of your emotions. Whatever it is that you prefer to ignore, hide or keep tampered down to a manageable level, could begin to stir. This could be no more than an annoyance (with Uranus semi-square) that you can continue to ignore OR it might be that itch that you finally decide to scratch. Venus also in Cancer, just ahead of the Sun/Moon is still close enough to support whatever process you choose to embark on.
Remember that the Moon moves quickly so this energy will transition in a day or so. You may choose a ritual process to charge the intention you set. This can be as simple as lighting a candle, infusing it with herbs such as Sandalwood, Gardenia or Eucalyptus OR by just standing outside, observing the darkness of the night sky whilst holding focus on your intention.
